Force Design 2030: The Marine Corps Supporting the Joint Force Commander Across the Range of Military Operations

The Marine Corps is an expeditionary fighting force that provides the Joint Force Commander (JFC) with a range of unique capabilities. Recently, the Commandant of the Marine Corps proposed a force-redesign with the purpose of modernizing the Marine Corps to provide solutions needed to compete and defeat peer threats in the contested littoral regions of the Indo-Pacific. The challenge for the Marine Corps has been determining what changes can be made with current weapon systems that will enable the expansion of new capabilities needed to win while operating within the enemy weapons engagement zone in the littorals. The Marine Corps seeks to add weapon systems to provide new capabilities to match growing power competitions at sea but the Joint Force Commander (JFC) will still expect access to current Marine Air Ground Task Force capabilities suited to win in irregular wars, land based conventional wars, and small wars. With the seven warfighting functions in mind, The Marine Corps Force Design 2030 creatively shapes a fighting force toward peer threats in the Pacific. Focused on the contested littoral regions and operating from the sea, the force-redesign is able to provide adequate capabilities for the JFC that successfully work across the range of military operations (ROMO).
